Description
Standing Saint
Probably Southern Germany or Alpine region, 18th or early 19th century. Carved wood, with remnants of an old polychrome surface or glaze. Mounted on a rectangular plinth. Fully carved figure of a bearded saint in a contrapposto stance. The figure is dressed in a floor-length tunic and a heavy mantle draped over it, falling in deeply undercut, partly bowl-shaped folds. The right hand is held slightly away from the body, while the left hand rests on the chest in a gesture of humility or prayer. Height: approx. 118 cm. Condition: Isolated tension cracks in the wood and minor chips along the edges (hem and plinth). The fingers of the right hand and the toes of the right foot show slight wear.
