AUDUBON, JOHN JAMES, AFTER, *The Birds of America*, 1972, a selection of 20 vertical plates as a facsimile edition in photolithography; the original is a monumental work of natural history illustration published between 1827 and 1838. It contains 435 hand-colored prints of North American birds, depicted life-size and often in dynamic, natural scenes. The work is considered one of the most significant and valuable ornithological books in history. The selection of plates and the introduction were compiled by Dr. Gottfried Mauersberger from the original copy held by the State Museums of Meiningen. The edition is limited to 1,000 copies, of which the first 500 are bound in Japanese block stitching; this copy bears the number 437.
