Over a quarter of a million euros for a pocket watch - Auction day raises 1.65 million euros
Eppli, the renowned auction house for jewellery and watches in Germany, held the first auction Saturday in its ‘Best Of’ series last weekend. In April, a total of five auctions with different focal points will be held to auction off the best items consigned in the previous months. The first auction Saturday was a great success and a brilliant start to the auction month, with Eppli realising a sensational 1.65 million euros for its consignors.
An extremely rare and complicated pocket watch stood out in particular, rising from a starting price of €20,000 to €260,000 in a real bidding thriller. The watch was courted by bidders in Singapore, the USA, the Netherlands, China, the Czech Republic and Luxembourg in a fierce bidding battle before it was finally sold to a private collector from Beijing. The Patek Philippe pocket watch is a rare and very complicated Savonette watch with minute repeater and sonnerie. This watch was specially made for the watchmaker and dealer Franz Michaelsen in Rome. It is not only an exceptional example of the watchmaker's craftsmanship, but also a valuable collector's item and a real gem for watch lovers all over the world. In addition to the pocket watch, other impressive watches were also auctioned, including a Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref 3700 for €95,000, a Montblanc Collection Villeret Tourbillon for €84,000 and an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak for €91,000.
Jewelry, porcelain and art also achieved impressive results, including a solitaire ring with an 8.2 ct old-cut diamond that was knocked down for €30,000, an extensive service by Royal Copenhagen called "Flora Danica" that fetched €65,000, a bronze by Fritz Klimsch that was auctioned for €60,000 and a painting by Michele Giovanni Marieschi that changed hands for €38,000.
Eppli would like to thank all bidders and interested parties for their trust and looks forward to the upcoming auctions. Further information on upcoming auctions and exhibits can be found on the auction house's website.
