Alternative investment - Hubertus Drabarczyk vel Grabarczyk, Managing Director Eppli Juwelier, gemologist E.G./F.G.G., expert for jewelry and jewels
Gold and precious jewelry have always been considered a safe investment - especially in times of crisis or high inflation. As a gemologist, Hubertus Drabarczyk, Managing Director of Eppli Juwelier and our expert for jewelry and jewels, is very familiar with these alternative forms of investment - and was also a guest on this topic at the discussion panel "On the hunt for rare treasures" at the "Invest" trade fair in Stuttgart at the end of April.
- Many people don't consider tangible assets such as handbags, wine or precious jewelry to be sensible investments. What do you think?
I don't agree with that. Watches, high-quality jewelry set with rare or untreated gemstones and natural diamonds, as well as designer handbags experience annual increases in value in the double-digit percentage range. Buying quality at auctions or on the secondary market preserves the value and can even increase it. Of course, this is always subject to the condition, quality and desirability of the item on the market. Vintage watches, for example, often exceed their original price.

- Jewelry and watches or gold bars - which is the better choice?
That depends on personal taste, budget and individual circumstances and needs: Gold bars have always been a classic, effective way to invest money. In times of crisis and uncertainty or even geopolitical tensions, this is directly reflected in the continuously rising price of gold. Unfortunately, there are currently many crises at the same time!
If liquidity is needed at short notice, gold can be sold quickly and easily. Jewelry and watches, on the other hand, have the clear advantage that they can be enjoyed and worn on a daily basis and not just kept in a safe.
As already mentioned in the first answer, the following applies to all three: if you buy at auctions or on the secondary market, you can maintain their value and even exceed it in the long term because they are crisis-resistant and can be sold quickly and easily. This is because they function like their own currency, independent of markets, borders and circumstances.
- What should you look out for when buying jewelry or jewels as an investment - and what should you look out for when buying gold?
I always recommend that customers seek advice. There are subtle nuances that distinguish valuable pieces and good investment opportunities from less valuable pieces. After all, the quality, origin, rarity, craftsmanship and materials used ultimately determine the value and its durability. Our auctions and our fine jewelry store are ideal for this. Firstly, you benefit from first-class conditions and secondly, you receive individual advice tailored to your specific needs. This creates value and can increase it in the long term. At Eppli, we specialize in investment properties, have an international network of dealers and collectors and provide appraisals for insurance companies. Our highly qualified experts will be happy to value your gold and jewelry free of charge and without obligation.
