Description
Biedermeier couple.
Probably Thuringia (Sitzendorf or Volkstedt), inspired by Capodimonte motifs. Late 19th / early 20th century. Polychrome-decorated porcelain figure on an oval naturalistic base with gilt decoration. Depiction of a gallant couple in fashionable Biedermeier attire. The gentleman wears a blue tailcoat with salmon-colored lining, striped trousers, and a gray top hat, with his arm affectionately placed around the lady. The lady wears a wide white dress richly decorated with multicolored scattered floral motifs, a wine-red shoulder collar, and a large bonnet. The faces are finely painted in overglaze colors. On the underside, an underglaze blue crowned “N” mark (an imitation of the Neapolitan Capodimonte mark, commonly used by Thuringian manufactories). Red painter’s number “10”. Good age-related condition. Minor wear to the gilt decoration along the edge of the base. Height: approx. 23 cm.
