The present work by the Berlin artist Detlef Nitschke is distinguished by its narrative lightness and the characteristic impressionistic manner for which the artist is known. Nitschke, recognized for his atmospheric cityscapes and genre scenes, captures here an intimate moment of social life. At the center of the composition stands a young woman in a lilac-colored dress, her gaze directed past the viewer. Behind her appears the striking figure of a bearded captain in naval uniform, who gestures invitingly toward a festively laid table adorned with flowers and silverware. Particularly noteworthy is Nitschke’s confident handling of light and color: the loose brushwork and selective accents in white and pink lend the scene a lively, almost sketch-like immediacy reminiscent of the tradition of the Belle Époque.
