Description
EARLY 20TH-CENTURY ARTIST – “Hungarian Pastoral Idyll with Draw Well”
Oil on panel. Dimensions: 64 × 84 cm. Signed lower area, illegibly. In good condition consistent with age, showing pronounced age-related craquelure across the entire surface and minor areas of paint loss. Presented in a profiled wooden frame. Framed dimensions: 98 × 77 cm. This large-format composition transports the viewer into the vast landscape of the Hungarian Puszta. At the center stands a shepherd in richly ornamented traditional attire, accompanied by two vigilant sheepdogs. The masterful arrangement of the flock in the foreground lends the scene remarkable spatial depth. Particular attention should be paid to the atmospheric handling of light: the gentle glow of the moonrise on the horizon contrasts beautifully with the detailed rendering of textures — from the dense fleece of the sheep to the traditional embroidery of the shepherd’s cloak. The depiction of the traditional draw well (Gémeskút) as a strong vertical element creates a striking compositional counterpoint to the expansive horizontal line of the landscape. The work stands firmly within the tradition of Central European genre painting and impresses through its ethnographic accuracy and its calm, almost sacred atmosphere.
