Jules Jean Ferry was a specialized French painter of hunting scenes and landscapes in the 19th century, whose work is deeply rooted in the tradition of the Barbizon School. The present atmospheric cabinet study depicts a hunter in a small boat lying in wait for ducks among dense reeds. Particularly noteworthy is the subtle rendering of light conditions and the reflections on the water. Ferry employs a subdued, earthy palette to capture the stillness of the morning and the humid atmosphere of the marshland. The precise signature and the documented provenance through renowned South German art dealers (Bubenik and Schaller) underscore the authenticity and the collectible quality of this fine example of French genre painting.
