Description
BURY, Friedrich, ATTRIBUTED/ AFTER (F.B.: 1763 - 1823), 'Portrait of a gentleman', half-length portrait of a man, facing the viewer. It is possible that the sitter is General Gerhard Johann David von Scharnhorst (1755 - 1813). See inscriptions on the reverse. Oil on canvas, HxW: approx. 32 x 27 cm (HxW frame: approx. 49.5 x 44 cm). Signs of age and rubbing, craquelure, minimal colour losses in places, soiling, slightly stained, old restored and retouched. With frame (slight damage). NOTE: Friedrich Bury was a German classicist painter and graphic artist who made a name for himself as a portraitist in particular. He was born in Hanau and was a pupil of Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder. In 1782, Bury travelled to Italy, where he was in close contact with Goethe and became a member of the so-called ‘German Artists’ Circle’ in Rome. In addition to portraits, his work also includes allegorical and mythological depictions. Related literature: Feist, Peter, Bury, Johann Friedrich, in: AKL, Vol. 15, Munich 1996.
