Description
Walter Johannes Becker (1886–after 1930) “Bust of a Woman,” 1930
Cast stone with ochre-brown patina. Signed and dated on the lower edge at the side. Height: 46 cm. Conceived in a calm and self-contained manner, this bust of a woman depicts a head gently inclined to the left, with short-cropped hair in the style of the late 1920s. The softly modeled facial features and the reduced, clearly structured formal language point to an approach influenced by Art Deco, while also reflecting a sober, classicizing tendency. The restrained ochre-brown patina emphasizes the sculptural modeling of the flesh tones and the finely articulated structure of the hair, lending the work a balanced and harmonious overall appearance. Good condition consistent with age, with minor chips and small surface irregularities.
The German sculptor, medallist, and plaque artist Walter Johannes Becker trained at the School of Applied Arts in Dortmund and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He executed numerous funerary monuments, including works at the main cemetery in Dortmund, and also produced a significant number of medals and plaques. Literature: AKL Saur, vol. VIII, 1994, p. 177.
