MEISSEN impressive figure group 'Neptune and Thetis', 1860-1924 and later. From a series of 40 figure groups for Empress Catherine II, designed in 1773 by Johann Joachim Kaendler. The figure is divided into three, or actually 4 parts. The base plate consists of two parts that have been joined together with porcelain mass. The curved side on the display side is decorated with alternating gold-plated and white rocailles. On the left side, 2 hippocampi emerge from the foamy waves, a Triton riding on them and another on the right side, a Nereid and a smaller Triton and 3 water-spouting dolphins are evenly distributed on the plinth. A free area has the pressed inscription 'Neptune No 1' and is used to display the Neptune/Thetis group. Left side with knob sword mark and press stamp 'No. 1', right side with later sword mark. Damage: All three cornucopias are damaged and/or glued, missing part on the fish tail of the left Triton, small damage. Fingers of the Nereid and a crack through the hand of the right Triton. Second group of figures: Neptune, with a cape, trident and crown, stands in a mussel shell with an anchor behind him, Thetis with a dog at her feet. Sword mark on the back, H 42 cm. Damage: Trident glued in several places and only half preserved, 3 leaf tips on the wreath and 1 large toe missing, 1 arm of the anchor glued, underside with a fine hairline crack, this part of the figure lies loose on the plate (plug-in device missing). 3rd figure: Nereid emerging from the waves, with plug-in device (this means the sword mark is not visible), small finger damaged.
