Description
VON WERNER, ANTON (1843–1915) 'Double Portrait of Two Members of the Reichstag, Berlin' 1890
Oil on panel. Profile portraits of two gentlemen in strict side view, arranged one behind the other and looking to the right. The reduced composition focuses entirely on the physiognomic characterization of the subjects and demonstrates Anton von Werner's extraordinary portraiture skill. With fine realism and precise lighting, the individuality, social status, and intellectual presence of the figures are emphasized. The depicted individuals are two members of the German Reichstag during the time of Otto von Bismarck. The person depicted on the left is documented as the director of the Holzmann paper mill in Karlsruhe. The work was created in 1890 and is exemplary of the representative portrait painting of the late 19th century in the context of Wilhelmine Germany. HxW: 74/48 cm. Signs of age, paint flakes. Framed in an elaborately decorated, contemporary gilt frame. HxW: 102/77 cm.
