Description
VENETIAN SCHOOL “John the Baptist before Herod Antipas,” Italy, 18th century. Oil on canvas, mounted on particleboard. 60 x 45 cm. On the reverse, a technical data sheet from the Cabanis + Troschke restoration studio in Esslingen, dated October 1987. This composition depicts the biblical scene in which John the Baptist rebukes the tetrarch Herod Antipas and his wife Herodias for their illicit marriage. John, standing on the left and clad in a fur robe, points at the ruling couple with a warning gesture. Herod is depicted on a throne in magnificent red drapery and wearing a turban-like headdress, while Herodias stands beside him, observing the scene with a pensive gaze. The mixed-media painting style and the use of light are inspired by the Venetian school of the Settecento. The work captivates with its narrative depth and the characteristic depiction of Baroque interior architecture. The painting underwent extensive restoration in 1987. During this process, the canvas was mounted onto a panel. The restoration report notes the thinning of the browned varnish, spot-wise puttying and retouching with de-oiled oil paints, as well as a final protective coating of dammar resin. Age-related craquelure is present. The overall condition is good for its age.
