Description
SPANISH SCHOOL OF THE 17TH CENTURY 'Madonna with Child and the Lamb of God'
Circle of Seville, mid to second half of the 17th century, in the tradition of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. Oil on canvas, mounted on a wooden panel. This painting is a fine example of Sevillian Baroque painting of the 17th century. The depiction shows the Virgin Mary in a contemplative pose, while the Christ Child rests in her arms. A particularly iconographic detail is the lamb at the left edge of the painting, which gently touches the Child with its left paw – a clear allegory of the Agnus Dei and Christ's future sacrifice. Stylistically, the work is closely aligned with the formal language of the Sevillian school. The soft modeling of the flesh tones and the emotional intensity of the depiction is reminiscent of the religious paintings of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. At the same time, the pronounced light-dark contrasts (tenebrism) and the more controlled lighting indicate influences from earlier masters such as Zurbarán and the generation before Murillo. The palette typical of the Spanish Siglo de Oro, composed of warm earth tones, is highlighted by the bright carmine of the cloak, enhanced by targeted light accents (chiaroscuro).
