A PAIR OF MONUMENTAL WALL SCONCES IN THE LOUIS XV STYLE
France, second half of the 19th century, bronze, cast, chased and with beautiful aged patina, an exceptionally impressive pair of four-light wall sconces of considerable size and sculptural quality. The wall-attached stem is shaped as an elegantly curved, asymmetrically structured Rocaille console, transitioning into finely crafted leaf volutes and floral motifs. From the central body extend four widely splayed, S-shaped arms, ending in leaf-shaped candle cups on decorated drip pans, H: 65 cm. Normal signs of age.
The appliqués impress with their masterful chasing and their powerful, stately presence; in their 65 cm height and four-light design, they are showpieces originally intended for the furnishing of an important castle salon or a grand bourgeois city palace. The craftsmanship suggests an origin from a renowned Parisian foundry.
