Description
NUSS, KARL ULRICH (1943) “Reclining Minotaur”, 1973
Bronze, brown patinated. Height approx. 8.5 cm, length approx. 17.5 cm. Incised signature on the underside of the right hind leg. In his characteristic formal language, Karl-Ulrich Nuß reinterprets the ancient motif of the Minotaurus. Instead of the usual threatening monumentality, Nuß chooses a reclining, almost introspective pose. The surface of the bronze is animated by the artist’s typical finely detailed modeling, which breaks the light and gives the figure an organic presence. Particularly striking are the twisted horns, which form a dynamic contrast to the resting body. The work is exemplary of Nuß’s output in the early 1970s, a period in which he intensely engaged with the human and animal figure in the tension between myth and abstraction.
