Madonna and Child on a Rococo Base
Southern Germany or Austria, late 18th century. Carved wood in the round, polychrome finish. The Madonna is depicted standing on a cloud base in a gentle contrapposto pose. She wears a red undergarment and a wide, blue-painted mantle, which falls in deep bowl- and tube-shaped folds across her hips and left arm. On her left arm, she holds the almost nude Christ Child, who looks toward the viewer with a gesture of blessing. Her gaze is devoutly directed into the distance, and her head is framed by a dark veil. The figure stands on a striking Rocaille base, characterized by dynamic C-scrolls, openwork carving, and volutes, lending a sense of playful lightness to the otherwise vertically oriented figure. Height: approx. 87 cm. Condition: The polychrome surface has been partly restored. The Madonna’s fingers and parts of the Child’s limbs show damage or old restorations. The base exhibits age-related drying cracks.
