Description
Artist-designed Oriental carpet after PAUL KLEE. KARABAGH/CAUCASUS, 20th century, 275x148 cm.
Commissioned work and unique piece. Classically knotted Caucasian oriental carpet with clear references to the work of Paul Klee. The landscape-format carpet shows two large figures filling the format, sitting opposite each other as if draped on recamier chairs. The heads of these figures are borrowed from the painting “Senecio.” “Senecio” (from Latin senex “old”, “old man', 'elder” also known as “Soon to be old”) is one of the most famous paintings by Bauhaus artist Paul Klee from 1922. It depicts an abstract portrait of a man using geometric shapes such as squares and circles, and its naive style shows influences from African masks and the Bauhaus design language.
The use of these simple forms has a symbolic effect and contrasts powerfully and associatively with the classic Caucasian pattern elements in bold colors. A particular dynamic is also created by the choice of complementary color areas: the figures dressed in green are arranged against a wine-red background. At the top of the center, above the two figures, birds are lined up next to each other. The lower two corners, also wine red, are labeled and dated: “PauP KeLee 1922.” The gray-blue main border is patterned with sawtooth motifs. In good condition considering its age, but there is old moth damage on the upper edge, measuring approx. LxH: 46 cm x 2 cm. A unique collector's item.
