Königreich Württemberg, Reisepass, 19. Jh.,

Item number: 1113889

The passport was issued to a certain Hieronymus Schmid, born on 28 January 1827, resident in Söflingen near Ulm. A 'Kellner' by profession (historical job title; see also 'Keller'), the historical document records his stays and border crossings in the years 1855 to 1863. Initially only issued for one year, the passport was repeatedly extended by three years in the following years. Thanks to a very precise description of the external features of the appearance, a very accurate picture of the holder of this historical document can be drawn. There are remarks about the colour of the eyebrows ('blond'), the shape of the mouth ('ordinary') or the physiognomic condition of the legs ('straight'). It is also noted that he is leaving the Kingdom of Württemberg for an indefinite period and is allowed to 'walk back and forth[...] freely and unhindered'. Foldable passport, folded on the long side. The 'cover page' is partially pre-printed, the rest is written on by hand in ink. Also various colour stamps. The title block of the 'cover page' is surrounded by an ornamental frame and divided into three fields. In the header column, the function and origin of the document as well as the register number of the passport. The left-hand column contains a description of the external characteristics of the holder of this official document. The right-hand column grants the holder official authorisation to leave the Kingdom of Württemberg for an 'indefinite' period and to travel to countries such as France and Switzerland. Signs of age and wear, light foxing, minor creases and tears. Further old fold marks next to the longitudinal fold.
