Description
ZIEGLER, RICHARD (1891–1992) 'Mädchen mit Bob' 1930
Lithograph on chamois-colored wove paper. Image size: approx. 20 cm x 20 cm. Signed and dated lower right. This refined lithograph from 1930 is a characteristic example of Ziegler’s mastery in portraiture during the interwar period. With a confident, almost sketch-like line, the artist captures the visage of a young woman in the typical style of the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity). Particularly noteworthy is the modeling of the shadow areas through dynamic hatching, which lends the face remarkable plasticity and psychological depth despite the graphic reduction. The fashionable bob haircut and the turned-up collar situate the sheet within the urban milieu of the early 1930s — an era in which Ziegler counted among the keenest observers of social physiognomy. Ziegler’s works from this period are of particular rarity, as he left Germany shortly thereafter, in 1933, due to the political situation. In excellent condition. The paper shows minimal age-related toning; the edges are clean and lie beneath the mat. The impression is strong and nuanced. Matted and framed. Overall dimensions (H x W): 37 x 34 cm.
PROVENANCE: Private collection, Pforzheim.
