KOTSCHENREITER, HUGO (1854–1908) “Summer Landscape with a Stream in Moonlight”
Oil on wooden panel. 18 × 14 cm. Signed lower right in ligature: G. H. Kotschenreiter. Finely executed, atmospheric landscape in vertical format. The central focus of the composition is a dense group of trees along a stream bank, whose dark silhouette stands out in strong contrast against a cloudy night sky. The full moon breaks faintly through the cloud cover, illuminating a distant village suggested in the background as well as a gentle line of hills. Hugo Kotschenreiter, primarily known as a genre painter of the Munich School and a master student of Karl von Piloty, demonstrates in this small-format work his talent for subtle light effects and close observation of nature. Good original condition. The paint layer is stable and shows age-appropriate craquelure. On the reverse, gallery labels from Galerie Ingo Bubenik as well as handwritten inventory numbers. Provenance: Galerie Bubenik, Munich (according to enclosed confirmation dated 5 April 1978). Private collection, Southern Germany (Mr. Fritz Müller, Sindelfingen).
