Description
GRUCHOT, HILLA (1934) 'M.S. Rosa', 1972
Oil on hardboard. 43 × 53 cm. Framed: 47 × 58 cm. Signed in white lower right: H. GRUCHOT. On the reverse of the panel, titled, inscribed, and dated in blue fiber pen: “M.S. Rosa” Hilla GRUCHOT, Munich 1972. Executed in the characteristic manner of Naïve painting typical of Hilla Gruchot, the present work depicts a colorful passenger ship, the “M.S. Rosa,” navigating a deep blue body of water structured with fine wave lines. The ship is adorned with numerous passengers and details such as lifeboats and flags (including Italy). Particularly striking is the stylized plume of smoke, rendered as white curls, rising from the tricolor funnel. Behind the ship stretches an idyllic shoreline landscape with a row of colorful houses, a blooming flower meadow, and gentle rolling hills beneath a clear blue sky dotted with decorative, cotton-like clouds. The work captivates through its flat composition, vivid coloration, and that narrative lightness which made Gruchot’s works within the Munich Naïve tradition so popular.
