Description
FOERSTER, HEIDI (1932) 'Flower Still Life' 1962
Watercolor on coarse handmade paper. 67 x 51 cm (visible size). Monogrammed and dated in pencil at the lower right 'HF. 62'. Framed under glass: 94/76 cm. The present work is a characteristic example of Heidi Foerster's virtuosic handling of watercolor technique in the early 1960s. The composition impresses with its expressive use of color and the deliberate application of the wet-on-wet technique, in which the bright red, violet, and yellow tones of the flowers
flow organically into one another. Foerster largely forgoes strict contours and lets the floral splendor emerge from the contrast between deep, almost black shadow areas and light-filled color accents. The texture of the heavy laid paper remains visible as a design element, giving the depiction a special depth and tactile quality. The work is in the tradition of modern floral still life, which skirts the boundary of abstraction without entirely abandoning the natural form. Good, age-appropriate condition. The colors appear fresh and contrasting. Minimal waviness of the paper due to the wet painting technique.
