Buddha Shakyamuni in Mandalay style. THAILAND, 1st half 20th c., Buddha is depicted sitting on a pedestal and wearing a robe decorated with glass stones. His hands are in the gesture bhumisparsa mudra, hair is braided into tight curls and coiffed into a topknot. The hairline is adorned with a crown band of glass jewels. Bhumisparsa mudra represents the moment just before enlightenment. The Buddha is seated in meditation, left hand in his lap, right palm down, touching the earth. The statue is carved in fine wood and gilded over a black-brown lacquer, creating a beautiful effect. H: 51 cm. Signs of age, dam. Enclosed: matching oak base (h: 69 cm), dam.
