About the product
Eprouvette/ powder measuring device, likely 20th century, pistol-like object with a wooden handle and a brass mechanism, gear wheel mounted on top with chamber lid and strong spring catch and scale I. - VIII. Additionally engraved with the word ‘PAT N °5’. Total length: approx. 21 cm. Signs of age and rubbing. PROVENANCE: South German private collection.
NOTE: The eprouvette is an extremely effective historical instrument for the quality control of gunpowder and was used for its precise determination and measurement. When the powder charge was ignited, the resulting pressure pushed the steel cover away and moved the cogwheel into a notch. The number on this notch indicated whether the powder charge had the correct strength or whether it was too weak or too strong.
