Ancient sculptures: a brief introduction

For thousands of years, ancient sculptures have been produced for a wide variety of purposes. They are fundamentally three-dimensional, body-like replicas in various scales. While some ancient sculptures are only a few centimeters tall, huge statues several meters high can also be found. In former times (and partly still today) sculptures were made as images of famous personalities, which decorated temples, palaces, villas or public facilities. In addition, there were numerous religious sculptures depicting various angels, apostles, saints or even Jesus himself. Images of "normal" people were also created, but much less frequently.

Even today, antique sculptures are extremely popular. Whether as a small, elegant accessory in your own four walls or as a larger monument in the garden, which attracts the attention of all guests.

Tip:
Structures can also be called a sculpture or a large sculpture. However, only if they are officially recognized as a work of art.

Ancient sculptures: a long history

If you are also wondering when the first sculptures were made, we have to travel far back in time. To be precise, all the way back to the Stone Age. Nowadays, it is believed that the first figure-like replicas were made of clay, minerals and ivory by prehistoric people and mostly depicted female figures. While these sculptures were not very detailed in the beginning, the art of sculpture continued to develop over the coming millennia. From simple figures emerged over time the first statues, which showed an ever greater degree of detail and also in terms of proportions were in no way inferior to a real human being.

Prices of antique sculptures

As you might have guessed, pricing antique sculptures is not exactly easy and depends on several significant factors. First, the already mentioned "size" of a sculpture would be important here. On the other hand, the age as well as the condition should also be considered in order to find an appropriate price. Other essential criteria are also the material used and the artist who created the particular antique sculpture.

A large sculpture that is made of high quality materials, is very old, in good condition and at the same time created by a famous sculptor can therefore be worth incredibly high sums.

In addition to exceptional rarities, we carry many other antique sculptures, some of which are much cheaper. Some can be purchased for several hundred euros, others for several thousand.
